then when i saw this video, "matt damon rips sarah palin" and then accompanying the 10.8 million views, and i was intrigued to say the least, because what could this actor dude have to say?
Hellz. to. the. no. Just because I'm a Republican does not mean I support Sarah Palin. She is pretty psycho. I'm on board with Damon on this one. I really don't understand why she has a TV show - I couldn't stop cringing at her desperate appeals to pathos and irrelevant manipulation of the media to achieve her political ends. I, as well as many other Republicans, am not eager to see a 2012 Palin campaign at all. Her points of contention veer from the true issues, and that simply isn't right.
Also (sorry this is long, maybe I'll blog about this), but I don't know, this has really been bugging me. Maybe I'll just start by asking a question: Why do you support the Democratic party?
If I were to anticipate a few answers, I can imagine things like "gay rights", "animal rights", "rights in general", "helping poor people" etc. In this sense, of course the Democratic party is appealing. In contrast, the Republicans may be viewed as "villains" for supposedly neglecting these issues. Our age bracket is especially susceptible to Democratic appeals, because these are the issues that are tangible, perhaps the only political issues you ever take a stand on.
However, if you claim to be a "Democrat" and don't truly understand its role in politics, it becomes very difficult to argue with. I could argue, for instance, about illegal immigration, since I know you were angered about the legislation in Arizona recently. Many Democrats deemed Brewer's decision "racist", but do you know what the law actually entailed? If a person is caught committing a crime, they may be able to check their status. Do you know why this law was implemented? People were crossing the border and shooting innocent civilians - it is a protective law, not a discriminating one. To deem it "racial profiling" and call it a day is an extremely ignorant argument.
In general, with things like the Dream Act, Healthcare, economic reform, I often find my points inexpressible because of a lack of acknowledging both viewpoints. I don't mean to stereotype, but there is a certain ignorance about the Democratic ideal, in the sense that so many of their policies are impractical. Name one government-run program that has been successful and doesn't simply waste money.
Also, when you are economically self-sufficient and have to support a family, I wonder if you'll praise the Democratic government with the same vigor when its actually your money going towards taxes and paying off debts.
I'll stop now, but yes, I am definitely willing to discuss more.
oh my...i had to look back to see what awful things i wrote...i know you don't support palin, who would. but thanks for the lecture...we should talk...i'm too lazy to type it out (here you mutter...damn democrat)
Oh wow, looking back on my comment, that was kind of outrageous(ly bitchy JK). I guess lately I've been feeling very politically charged (?) to say the least. Haha but yes we can discuss politics if you want... or we can just accept our differences and let it be. In fact, our usual Democrat vs. Republican banter is actually kind of funny ("God, she's such a Republican"...ah, 8th grade advisory).
