"because it holds entertainment value...for me!"

i will now participate in sharing a recent conversation i had with a family member. please note: it won't be as funny as sonia's and it won't be as interesting as tina's. [said like Rob Lowe in Parks & Recreation] but, i found it to be personally, quite a fascinating look into my father's mind.

this morning we shared an argument about his favorite movies of all time, Serendipity and The Proposal. y'all probably haven't seen Serendipity--it was a shitty 2001 rom-com with kate beckinsale, john cusack and an atrocious plot-line...that i've of course seen cuz it was on netflix-instant and why not.

anyway, i just wanted to list a series of completely invalid points my father made during this argument while he put his hands on his hips and stared at me sternly (intermittently glancing at my mom for back up, to which she made no reply)

  • [on why Serendipity doesn't suck] "Because it holds entertainment value...for me!"
    • this is the dumbest, most vague assertion i've ever heard, every movie holds entertainment value, that doesn't mean it doesn't have the ability to suck
  • [on why the dad from the proposal is the funniest character] "Because every rom-com* needs to have a NAYSAYER! A NAYSAYER! In this case, it is Craig T. Nelson, Meg, and you are just going to have to deal with that! Please!"
    • not only is this point completely random, but i have no idea why he ends up pleading with me to understand the structure of movies
  • [probably as he's interrupting one of my very vaild points] "Listen, listen.. give me a name. What is one of your favorite movies? HUH? What is one of your favorite movies...and how about...how about I tell you if I like it. Hmm?"
    • this was so immature I had to run out of the room screaming, "Yous a child! Yous a child! Go cry to John Cusack cuz yous a child!"
  • [Me coming back into the room with a fresh cup of coffee] "Obviously man, my favorites are critically-acclaimed masterpieces and you just need to own up to the fact that you are prone to liking every crappy movie Sandra Bullock makes." To which he replied... "NO! NO! ... You know what's at the top of my list? Hmm? It's Casablanca."
    • OK. Not only did he claim that his favorite movie is the most romantic movie ever made, but he knew I hadn't seen it. This was a childish attempt to establish his superiority.
  • [Again, randomly] "You know the naysayer from Serendipity? What's his name? Ummm...from that HBO show that just ended..?" I say, "Entourage. Jeremy Piven." "Right...so like I said.. What's your favorite movie? JUST TELL ME."
    • i have no idea where he was going with that
and then i left.
*yes, he uses the word "rom-com" , and does so without a trace of irony... :(
